Thing 11: Instant Messaging
Chat. The first duty I had as a new librarian was to coordinate the virtual reference service at UNT. A must for programs with distance students. We've gone from a local Docutek system (now Altarama) to trying a Tutor.Com via a Consortia with AskColorado's academic queue to offer 24/7. In addition, we now have a meebo widget for our AskUs page and most librarians, who are liaisons to subjects, have a meebo chat agregator account for their area. Mine is sociology, and my IM name is lillylibrarian for all accounts. Another neat tool is tinychat.
